Caught with my pants down

There are many times in my life where I have gotten my ass in trouble. However, I can't recall a time where my ass got me in trouble.

That changed Friday night when I read the following email from someone who claimed to be me on Facebook:

Dear Brett,

I found this video of you from high school. You can see your ass in it. Check it out.

Sincerely,

Me

Dumbfounded, I clicked on the link anticipating me and some shot of my ass. What I got instead was nothing but a flashing screen on my computer that quickly turned blue. That blue screen has not changed in four days and I no longer have a working computer in my home.

My ass video turned out to be nothing more than a virus that killed my computer completely. As if that wasn't bad enough, the ass that sent me the video claiming to have my ass in it also shipped the email to all my friends on Facebook. There is nothing like pissing off people you haven't seen since high school. I am sure they can't wait to see my ass this summer at our 20th Reunion.

I was notified Tuesday afternoon that my computer needs to be rebuilt and everything on my hard drive is lost. No more working on lesson plans, no more checking email, and no more blogging from home.

I don't know how long it will take before I get my computer back, or when I will be able to start writing again on a daily basis. The computer tech in charge of my job told me to remain patient and that when I get it back, it will be better than new.

What I do know is that I will never let the lure of my ass get the best of me again.

  1. There is a website, I can't remember the name of it right now, but as soon as I do I'll send it to you, but it lists all new and old viruses to watch out for.

I am so sorry, viruses suck...ok, M already did it.

  2. Wow, there's just not much to say to that, except of course that it sucks.

Maybe your Facebook friends won't be lured so easily...=) I'm pretty sure I wouldn't open something like that. Then again, maybe I would.

  3. I received that email from "you" and tried to watch it, but it didn't work, and I just decided to, as Alani might say, "fuck it." I guess my virus scanner caught it or something. Glad it did. Thanks for letting us know.

  4. oh! That sucks. I've been pretty cautious about facebook since people claim to know me but I've never heard of them.

I hope you get your computer back and running soon. I lose it without some form of electronic communication on a daily basis.

  5. I got the same thing a couple of weeks back, and it kept coming from different friends so I knew something was up. They couldn't all have pics of me (I don't think anyway - there was that one time....).

  6. Coach, your ass saved my ass, I think. I saw a story on someone's blog about Facebook and a virus that crashes your computer. Later that day I received an email from someone I didn't know, saying they'd left a note for me about you. I don't remember specifically what it said but it had your first and last name on it. It was too coincidental after reading the warning so I deleted the email and I haven't been to Facebook! I'm sorry they got ya, sucks big time. I'd be waffling between scaring my kids with the rage and crying big crocodile tears!

  7. I actually caught a heads up about it from the news. Evidentally it's going around MySpace and Facebook. I will not be using either for awhile. Good luck rebuilding. It's a pain in the ass.

  10. OMG! That sucks. My son asked why people send virus's and my answer was "Cause they are ass's". Hope you get it fixed soon and it doesn't cost you a ton of money.

  15. I feel your pain...I had a virus a couple months ago that required some pretty extensive work. (I still don't have Itunes running again actually).

Glad you've kept your sense of humor about it! Good luck and hope you're back soon. :)

  16. I can't believe you did that!! Oh my.

I am protected by Norton Live, which does live updates on a daily basis. Sometimes, I can just open Outlook, and a virus will float in. You don't even have to open attachments or emails anymore.

You have to pay a yearly fee for a "live" virus protector, but it is beats the costs of a repairman.
